My computer is getting a good signal from the router but it says the connection has limited or no connectivity.

The “Limited or No Connectivity” indication is because the network adapter has failed to get its IP address by DHCP from the router and Windows has defaulted to allocating a “169.254″ IP address.

Try repairing the TCP/IP stack and Winsock. Open a Command Prompt window (”Start > Run”, type cmd and click OK).

To repair the TCP/IP stack, at the prompt, type…

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt … and press Enter

(note the spaces in the command line). The original prompt will reappear.

To reset Winsock entries, at the prompt, type…

netsh winsock reset catalog … and press Enter

Exit the Command Prompt window and reboot the PC.

However, another possibility of Limited Connectivity may have come about because you have not entered the correct security key for the network. For example the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key or the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) key. Normally this key is set during the configuration of your router. If you cannot remember your security key you will need to access your router with a user name and password via its browser address such as This is just an example and may not be your routers address.

If you had connectivity and now for some strange reason you have limited connectivity it is likely that your wireless adaptor has somehow lost its settings so you will need to re-enter them.

Different routers have different default user names, passwords and addresses so check the documentation that came with your router before attempting access. A list of the default user id’s and passwords can be found at:

I have listed a few common default settings but your documentation is the Bible:
    MakeIP AddressUser IDPassword
    D-Link192.168.0.1adminadmin (or none)
    EchoLife HG520s192.168.1.1adminadmin
    Linksys192.168.1.1adminadmin
    Netgear192.168.0.1adminpassword
    SMC192.168.2.1
    US Robotics192.168.123.254

    MOST COMMON192.168.2.1

Once you have gained access to your router make a note of the security key because you will need to enter this key into your wireless connection setup configuration.

Please note that some routers have the security key physically shown on the underside of the router so you do not need the access details given above.

If your own personal user id and a password have been lost, you should reset your router to its default setting by pressing and holding the reset button which is normally recessed in a tiny hole. Of course this will mean that you will need to reconfigure your router from scratch.

Before getting to fancy. Is your wireless connection set up to DHCP.

Also, it the router WEP encrypted? I lot of routers have a button that will turn off encryption for a minute so you can connect. Press button then connect. Try that first. (Not all router have such a button but it’s easy if they do. Linkys routers have it right on the left front panel of the router just hold it in for a minute if that’s what you have. Good luck.

Well, I’m just guessing, since you said your parents, that you might not be allowed to go on the internet… BUT, this is what my parents did at one point. They blocked my computer from accessing the wireless internet (this is done by accessing the router (192.168.1.1 for linksys routers by default)) luckily, they hadn’t changed the password yet (which I set) and I was able to go unblock my computer and change it to a different name so it looked like I was still blocked.

So what they did is probably block your computer/IP from accessing the wireless internet. Or possibly put an Encryption key on it, such as WEP. Which can be cracked if you know how, could take 2 hours - 2 years though. And is, or should be legal since it’s your own network.

Anyway, if you don’t know the password then reset it by pushing the tiny button in the back of your router and the password will be reset to default (usually “admin” with no username). You can look up online from a computer that has internet for a list of default router username/passwords, or call a buddy and have them do it for you.

If this doesn’t work referr that other guy’s post, he sounds like he knows what he’s doing, as do I but I don’t feel like going more in depth than this, routers are complicated and hard to explain.

By the way, please never say Addy, it sounds dumb, no offence :/
