2 linksys routers on same network
Hi,
*edit* Yes you can, your going to have to unplug the router from the net if you only have 1 cable though. your question is a bit vague about if your friend can plug in or not */edit*
*edit* Cant resist an explanation of WHY it should work as there seems to be a large amount of people who dont know their networking
- This really is basic networking. Your router is most likely running DHCP and automatically providing both computers with an IP address/ subnet mask and their default gateway. Which is the IP address that the router assigns itself internally to allow communications.
This address is most likely something like 192.168.0.1 with .2 /.3 etc being assigned to the host PC’s and most likely on subnet 255.255.255.0 - This IP address range will most likely be used for all computers that receive a DHCP IP address from that router. Now while wireless incorperates a lot of other “signals” and addressing it still also requires a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address.
Now, Unless you router is designed to create two separate subnets you will have no problem because both computers are within the same subnet and the router will be able to route traffic between them.
… Thirdly… COME ON the amount of people who have their server with a direct connection to the router and their laptops wireless is huge.
*/Edit*
The networking aspect of it should be treated the same as if you where both plugged into the same router. As far as the networking side of it goes you are both on the same local subnet/network and should have no problem with setting it up easily. Please see my source if you require a guide to do this. and feel free to contact me if you run into problems

network without router
you have some options.
1. Buy a cable. unless you are completely broke this is affordable. Link 1
2 Have your friend bring his or her own cable, instead of mooching off of you.
3. buy a Wireless adapter. However, these are more expensive.
4. go see if a neighbor can lend your friend one.
other than that there is Ad hoc networking but it’s hard and impossible without a wireless card. and I don’t even know the reason you are networking these computers together in the first place. if it’s for gaming forget about ad hoc just do one of the above. if it’s for file sharing, use an external hard drive to transfer it via USB, firewire, or eSATA ports. Or if you both have bluetooth cards you can use that to transfer files aswell. you’ve got a ton of options just depends on what your needs are and how much you are willing to spend. do some shopping!!
PS make sure he doesn’t have a wireless card in the device manager. Start>run> open: devmgmt.msc see if there’s a wifi card and refresh and discover new hardware!! GOOD LUCK!
